What Can Help Me Lose Weight With Pcos?

by admin on March 26, 2009

QUESTION
Kindly clarify may doubts on Metformin  tablets. My daughter, aged 21, has polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Her sugar level is normal. She is overweight. Along with exercises, the endocrinologist prescribed Metformin for 3  months. I believe the course did help to regulate her metabolism. Since PCOS predisposes one to diabetes, can she take the tablets on a regular basis? Is it harmful?
Her weight is under control. Though slightly on the higher side. She does exercise, though  not very regularly, and controls her food intake.
Can Metformin be taken regularly as a preventive to diabetes by PCOS  patients? Or can she have it periodically, for 3 months or so? Hope you will set my doubts to rest.

ANSWER
PCOS is being increasingly encountered in young girls of late. Several culprits appear to have contributed to this spurt, among them increased intake of refined foods (sugar, maida) tea, coffee, alcohol, fried foods; lack of fruits and vegetables in the diet. All these factors are leading to multiple mineral and vitamin deficiencies. Add to this  noxious mix lack of exercise, lack of rest, irregular sleep habits, smoking, overweight obesity, and mental and emotional stress, and it’s not surprising that young girls are falling prey to multi system metabolic endocrinal disorders.
Treatment of PCOS with metformin may make the metabolism appear to be normal, but withdrawal of the drug would cause the symptoms to resurface.
Metformin in small doses is reasonably safe, but in larger doses may affect the metabolism adversely. Metformin will not prevent diabetes form developing if the underlying cause of the metabolic problem is not dealt with. The drug is used in the treatment of diabetes for the same reason hat it is used in PCOS and should not be given indefinitely just to mask symptoms and allow the patient to continue living  in a fool’s paradise. It must be used in concert with healthier lifestyle habits.
