My mom is in her early sixties and she’s had chronic skin problems.

Both basal cell and squamous cell spots removed routinely. She has spent much of her life in the sun, so I know it’s a result of her addiction to tanning, plus the fact she’s got fair skin like me. Am I doomed as her daughter to have the same problems?

A: You are not “doomed,” so don’t panic. Your lifestyle choices, not your mother’s, will factor more into your risk for getting skin cancer than your genetics. Take note now and learn from your mom’s experience, especially since you have the same skin tone and sensitivity to the sun.
