Because there is always the possibility of microorganisms in eye makeup causing or spreading infection, it’s important that you use extreme caution if you test eyeshadow in the store. Here are some hints for trying on shadow:

1. Wipe the shadow with a tissue before testing.

2. To test for color, use only the area directly beneath the eyebrow. Stay above the crease in the eyelid and don’t go anywhere near the rim or base of the lashes.

3. If you feel safer not testing the shadow anywhere near the eye, you can use the V between your thumb and index finger. Just blend the shadow in as you would on your eyelid. Then hold your hand against your eye to check out the color.

4. Apply the shadow with a new Q-tip applicator.

5. If you are testing a crayon, sharpen it first. Then apply it only above the crease in your eyelid, or use your hand. 6. I wouldn’t test the cream shadow that comes in an applicator with its own wand near the eyes. Use your hand.
