From Botox to blueberries, there are endless ways to fight off aging, but of the slew of products and ideas floating around out there, only some have truly stood the test of time – and many of the best haven’t been around very long at all. If you’re looking to turn back the clock or at the very least slow down the ticking of time, why not get started now? Many of these new ideas in anti-aging are easy to use and require only a quick trip to the grocery store.
Omega 3 and Antioxidants
As it turns out – surprise! – the foods we eat affect our health. They also affect our physical appearance when it comes to aging. Two of the big buzz words today are the Omega 3 fatty acids and antioxidants. If you’re tuned out already, don’t be – these are simple to find. Eat more fish and more fruit. Specially, eat more of the so-called, “superfoods.”
Omega 3, or fatty fish oils, occurs naturally in most types of fish, but they show up more frequently in fish from a natural area. For example, salmon will have a great deal more Omega 3 than trout raised in a stocked lake. Most people take a supplement of Omega 3 if they are concerned about the amount of oil they are getting.
The Omega 3 works in a few ways to help with anti aging. It battles against senility, helps your heart and beats off depression as well. If you don’t have enough Omega 3 in your diet, you can suffer from memory lapses, sluggish thought processes and even sagging skin. Skin that has enough Omega 3 is firm and resilient. Skin that is deficient in the mineral is…not.
Antioxidants fight free radicals in your body. The free radicals, or mutated cells in your body, are what cause any number of diseases and lower your immune system over all. When you’re not taking in enough antioxidants, you’re boosting your chances of getting ill, but at the same time, you’re also going to see the effects in your skin tone, the condition of your skin and your overall energy levels as well.
To boost the number of antioxidants in your body, you simply need to increase the amount you ingest. This means eating more of particular kinds of food. These foods have been termed “superfoods” because they contain so many antioxidants and actually help prevent the anti-aging process from the inside out. Among the most popular superfoods you’ll find:
• Acai Berries
• Blueberries
• Broccoli
• Dark Chocolate
• Oranges
• Salmon
• Soy
• Spinach
• Tomatoes
• Walnuts
Retinol in Facial Creams
If you’re lucky enough to have a dermatologist who agrees that you need some anti-aging or acne care, you might wind up with a prescription for retinoids. This special form of Vitamin A is considered the top product when it comes to anti-aging, but you have to have a prescription to get the strongest doses.
If you’d like the benefits of retinoids, but don’t have a doctor willing to prescribe it, you can find smaller doses of the same ingredient in many anti-aging skin cream lines available over the counter in drug stores and beauty specialty shops. These “cosmeceuticals” use retinol, a less intense dose of the Vitamin A form, to help smooth skin.
There are other proteins available through these creams that actually relax muscles in the face. When the muscles relax, the wrinkles and fine lines on the face relax as well. These new proteins are found in the same sort of anti-aging creams as the retinol.
Wrinkle Creams with B3
While some lotions and cleansers protect the skin from future wrinkles or help to smooth out the appearance of any fine lines, a few products are actually filling wrinkles and improving the texture of your skin overall. Wrinkles are caused by the lack of collagen in the skin. Collagen is the type of fat that is just under the skin making your face smooth and soft. When the collagen depletes, the fibroblast cells in your skin are slowing down their natural production.
By stimulating these cells, they are able to produce almost the same amount of collagen as they always have. This means that your skin will appear to be naturally younger for far longer. Vitamin B3 is responsible for kicking those fibroblasts into action, ensuring that they are working at peak levels and producing new collagen. The more collagen produced, the smoother your skin can be.
In many of the same anti aging products you’ll find Hexamidine. Originally designed to hold moisture in diaper liners, the Hexamidine has also been shown to hold moisture in the skin as well. Since moisture contributes to that smooth, supple skin you need to look young, adding Hexamidine to your anti-aging products ensures that the moisture stays put in your skin and improves the appearance and the feel of your skin.
Sunscreen in Anti-Aging Products
Even with all of the advances in new chemicals and supplement discoveries, the best prevention for anti-aging remains sun blocks or sunscreen. UVA and UVB rays cause slightly more than 70 percent of the damage to your skin. When these rays have a chance to work on your skin you can expect your face to show signs of aging like discolored patches, wrinkles, fine lines, age spots and sallow, or yellowish, skin overall.
You used to be required to apply a separate sunscreen if you were going to prevent sun damage to your face and next. But now you can normally just apply your regular facial moisturizer. The moisturizer will likely contain sunscreen that has been specially formulated to work for hours in order to block those rays throughout your day. Be sure to look on any anti-aging products you buy for the presence of a sunscreen or sun block. The higher the SPF of that sunscreen, the more protection you’re getting.
