Q. My girlfriend has dark patches of skin on her neck, arms and legs. These have been there for 8 years. She does not have any problem except that the patch on her neck is quite noticeable. A dermatologist did a biopsy and suggested that it is toxic melanosis. What is this disease? Is it life-threatening? Are there any chances of the disease taking a dangerous form in future?
A. The term toxic melanosis sounds a little aggressive hut the condition itself is benign in nature. It occurs because of a combination of factors, mainly chemicals in environment and clothing and sunlight. Basically, she needs to avoid vegetable-dyed clothing (which releases color on each wash), use photoprotectioll, a mild topical steroid such as Flutivate cream once daily and oral antioxidants in the form of fruits or capsules. The condition is not a form of cancer and has no systemic relationship.

Kindly tell me whether there is any cure for the disease Toxic Melanosis and also suggest me the perfect specialist or dermatologist who can cure this as I have already consulted the topmost dermatologists like H.k.kar (RML HOSPITAL),Dilip Kumar Jayant ,Sunil Gupta etc,but till now I have not recovered although I am taking the continuous treatment since two years from now.I would be really thankful to you if you could guide me a specialist known for the same disease.
