"When John couldn’t find a belt to fit his expanding girth, he took it as a warning call When John passed out of college he also left behind his sporting habits (cricket, table tennis). He dedicated his body and soul to developing the family business of glove manufacturing and pursuing his MA and a diploma in Business Management in his free time. Food was the reward John turned to for all that heavy duty mental work. "Our family enjoys eating. Cheese puffs, pastries, triple egg omelettes, milk shakes, sometimes even mutton korma, were common at breakfast. Lunch may be a healthy chicken, rice and vegetables, but the promise of kebabs, French fries and fried rice at dinner would demolish our best intentions. In between we wolfed down cheese sandwiches, and ice creams as if we were starving." Sundays were devoted to gastronomical adventures in the city’s newest restaurants.

In 1992 John joined his father’s business as a full time making executive, and had his job cut out. The global gloves market had become hugely competitive. Courtesy demanded that he have at least a cup of tea or coffee with each client, and these toted up to 15 or 20 a day. Then there was all the sitting: "It was essential for me to keep up with the latest designs, and that meant surfing the net 12 hours a say, sometimes putting in Sundays as well."

THE REALISATION

In 2000 John went on an intensive tour of Europe and the Gulf where he onserved that "people in those countries were extremely fit and energetic." On one such trip John landed up in a showroom of belts and found to his embarrassment that it did not stock a single one that could secure his 37- inch waist. "I had to be content with hiding my belly under loose shirts and jackets.

"My father is an ace photographer and I’d run away from his camera, or tell him to warn me in advance to hold my breath and tuck in my tummy."

But while he could trick the camera, John couldn’t do the same with his health. He was developing backaches at regular intervals and his cholesterol was high. "I was only in my 20s and already feeling middle aged, stressed out, and lacking in energy. Walking up in the morning was getting tougher every day."

THE CHANGE

He started walking in the AM s but hour-long strolls on the Marine Drive bored John, so he bought a set of dumbbells and an impressive volume of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s The Bible of Bodybuilding fro weight training guidelines. He didn’t get very far. "Being an absolute novice I couldn’t understand the terminology, the exercise directions, or even human physiology."

John then joined a small gym near his home, where he fell prey to an over enthusiastic trainer, "whose idea of motivation was to push exercisers to lift more and more." John cut and ran before the barbell threatened to crush his washboard abs dreams. He ended up at the doorsteps of the Golds Gym in Texas, and snatched its early bird offer.

THE EXERCISE

John realized how closely he was treading the danger line when the initial gym evaluation revealed his Body Mass Index (BMI) to be at a high 28. Still, it took some time for the exercise habit to catch on. "I was irregular, kept missing sessions, couldn’t tell leg curl from a leg press and had to resort to numbering the machines to follow my workout schedule. I also did not dare to attempt cardio, for fear of over stressing my heart. Five of my family members had died of cardiac arrests and I thought a treadmill workout could set me up for one."

But when the rewards started trickling in despite his erratic regimen _4 kilos dropped in 2 years, more muscle definition _ his interest sparked. More so when he chanced upon the weight loss success of his business colleague Alex, featured in health magazines. " I thought, If he could do it, so can I"

John took up serious weight training and discovered to his delight that it helped him shed fat even faster.

He’s now so enthusiastic about his workout that Qi has made him team leader for the fitness competitions it conducts periodically.

THE DIET

Johns biggest challenge was getting his family to fall in with his new needs: "My wife is a very good cook and got upset when I spurned some of the calorific creations she’d spent hors salving over. Sometimes, in the interests of family peace, I was forced to compromise and eat the tabooed stuff." John realized his family needed time to adjust to his lean lifestyle. Providence came when wife Angela, enthused by John’s new trim look joined him at the gym. "Now she knows what’s good and what’s bad, and how much is okay. We’re both eating healthy and have cut down on our restaurant jaunts quite a lot."

John has every intention of staying with these habits lifelong because "now it’s not only a question if overweight. Heart disease runs in my family. Dad, who was diagnosed with heart disease several years ago, is frugal in his intake to date, no matter how loaded the table is, I don’t want to get to a stage where circumstances will force me to tighten the belt. I want it to be a matter of choice."

THE RESULT

15 kg dropped in spam of 18 months. "I’ve moved 4 notches up on the belt, and my body fat level is now at a very healthy 15 per cent."

THE REWARDS

"The compliments! Everyone tells me I look years younger. I seem to have shed years from my face and physique along with the extra ponds. Girls use to look right through me, now they check me out twice over, and that’s giving my wife a complex.

"After living life extra large for aeons I’m thrilled at finally being able to wear normal size clothes, and follow fashion trends without worrying how a fitted T-shirt will look on my belly. But I still retain some of my XL stuff in a corner of the closet as a sort of reminder ___and warning __ of what could happen if ever let my guard down..

Fitness has become an integral part of his life, insists John. "There will be no compromise in that area. I can make money and any time, but good health once lost, is very difficult to regain."
